Services were Feb. 11 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen, S.D., for Barbara Mitzel, 95, of Cold Spring, formerly of Aberdeen, who died Feb. 6 at Paynesville Area Healthcare.
Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Arrangements were made by Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, Aberdeen.

Barbara Mitzel was born north of Hague, N.D., to Joseph and Johanna (Feist) Senger. She married Carl Mitzel on Feb. 15, 1926, near Hague. The couple lived near Ridgeview on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. He died in June 1936. She and her family moved to Strasburg, N.D., where they lived for several years. In 1942, they moved to Aberdeen. She was employed by Northern State College as a cook for seven years. She then worked at Mother Joseph Manor's kitchen as a cook for several years. She later was a cook at the Roncalli High School cafeteria until she retired in 1985. She moved to Cold Spring in 1996 to be closer to her family. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aberdeen, Sacred Heart Altar Society Band 11, Women of the Moose, VFW Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters, Auxiliary Women of Relief Corps 18, and the Milwaukee Women's Club.

Survivors include her daughter and sons, Joan Loher of San Jose, Calif., William of Derry, N.H., Carl of Richmond, and Harry Salwei of Mansfield, S.D.; brother and sister, Lawrence of Linton, N.D., and Helen Weigel of Aberdeen, S.D.; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by four sons; and two brothers and one sister.
