Born in Fresno, CA, Joe attended Fresno State College, where he met and married Ruth Miller, his wife of 65 years. Joe's youthful passion was to become a member of the US Marines, following in the footsteps of his Uncle Jack. In 1950, shortly after marrying Ruth, Joe joined the Marines and served during the Korean War. He wore Marine hats proudly into the final years of his life, displaying the significance to him of his service to his country.
A child of the Great Depression, Joe was the youngest of the five children born to Edward and Lola Monck and was born and raised in Fresno, California. His four older siblings were Edna, Bob, Aldine and Margaret. Joe recalled his youth in 1930s and 1940s in Fresno with great fondness. His special love for his mother touched his family deeply. Joe's father died when Joe was 10 years old. Times being what they were, Joe began working at an early age. He developed a work ethic that served him well throughout his life.
Coming to Whittier, Ruth's community, after the Korean War, Joe completed TV repair school in Los Angeles and became a TV technician. He owned and operated Joe's Quality TV & Appliance for 40 years in Uptown Whittier. In his younger years, Joe shared his talents as a tenor soloist and light opera singer and sang at weddings and local churches, including United Methodist Church of Montebello. After retiring, Joe and Ruth enjoyed travelling in the US and Europe. Joe enjoyed photography as a hobby during his retirement, and worked periodically assisting a local professional photographer.
Joe is survived by Ruth, his wife of 65 years; his three children, Joe Monck (and his spouse, Ellen), Nancy Speck (and her spouse, Marvin), and Laurie Monck; his four grandchildren, Kyle and Lisa Speck, Hannah Monck Woodworth (and her spouse, Darrel), and Leah Monck; and his great granddaughter, Colette Woodworth.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held at Rose Hills in the Hillside Chapel, at 11am on October 7th, enter at Gate 17.
