Father: James Adams, Sr.
Mother: Martha Ann Murray
Spouse: Mrs. Mehatabel Jennette Fortiscue
--------------------------
James Adams enlisted as a Sergeant in Captain Henry Gibbs Local Defense Company and was mustered in November 1, 1861. He appears on a bounty roll dated April 4, 1863 for Captain William H. Spencer's Company of Independent Cavalry. He, along with approximately twenty-eight enlisted and officers of that company, was captured near Fairfield, Hyde County on February 20, 1864 and confined at Point Lookout, Maryland. He was exchanged at Aiken's Landing, Virginia March 15, 1865. He appears in the records of Co. A, 66th Regiment NC troops so apparently Captain Spencer's company was eventually incorporated into that regiment.
