[2015 Updated Information]
There is some confusion regarding Virginia's maiden name. Most accounts state that her name was HALL. However, until recently, there were no documents of her day that listed her maiden name in either form nor was there any indication of who her parents were to try and determine the name. Until recently ... a news item of her marriage has been found.

On the 4th of April, by the Rev. Wm. J. Pettigrew, John J. Walthall to Miss Virginia E., oldest daughter of the late Newton Hill, both of Richmond.

2015 Additional Update
Upon further research, Virginia's death record has been found and confirms that she was in fact the daughter of Newton Hill. Further research being done to confirm her mother's identity.
-----------
Virginia Evelyn Blythe was born Virginia Evelyn Hill (some sources say HALL) in March of 1831. On April 4, 1855 she married John J. Walthall in Richmond, Virginia. Together they had 3 children:

1) Emma R. Walthall, b. 1856 Virginia
2) Carrie H. Walthall, b. 1858 Virginia
3) Kate Irving Walthall, b. Dec. 30, 1859 Virginia

Virginia and John Walthall moved to Washington County, Texas between 1860 and 1862 it appears. John Walthall was killed at Gettysburg on July 3, 1863. Virginia then married the widower, Francis Marion Blythe on Dec 26, 1867 in Washington County, Texas. Together, Virginia and Francis Blythe had 3 children:

1) E. M. Blythe (a daughter), b. 1868 Texas. Probably died young as she does not appear after the 1870 census.
2) William H. Blythe, b. 1872 Texas
3) Mary Elizabeth Blythe, b. Dec. 26, 1874 Texas

John J. Walthall appears to be the same John J. Walthall, b. 1828 in Virginia who accompanied his brother, Barrett Alexander Walthall to Washington County, Texas. Barrett Alexander Walthall was born 1825 in Virginia and died 1867 in Navasota, Washington County, Texas. This John J. Walthall enlisted as a Private on 3/22/1862 at Washington, Texas, into "E" Co. Texas 5th Infantry. He was wounded 7/3/1863 and died of his wounds.

OBITUARY:
Mrs. Virginia E. Blythe
Mrs. Virginia E. Blythe died Monday afternoon, at 1:30 o'clock in the home of her son-in-law, Mr. R. P. Harrison, No. 1412 West Broad Street. Had she lived until March next she would have been seventy-six years old, and her long life has been filled with deeds of kindness and works of love.

Mrs. Blythe was married twice, her first husband being Mr. J. J. Walthall, a well known citizen in the old days of Richmond. After Mr. Walthall's death she removed to Texas, where she married Mr. F. M. Blythe. After residing in Texas twenty years she returned to her native State with her children and had made this city her home since.

The children who survive her are Mrs. J. W. Burk [Buck], of Wilmington, N.C.; W. H. Blythe, of Warrenton, Va., and Mrs. R. P. Harrison of this city.

For many years she had been one of the most active members of the Marshall Street Christian Church; a teacher in the Sunday school; a member of the Christian Endeavor and other church organizations, in all of which her influence for good was felt by both young and old.

The funeral will be held from the Marshall Street Church this afternoon at 3 o'clock. The pall bearers will be Messrs. W. F. Fox, George C. White, and Dr. D. P. Lipscomb, honorary; F. T. Sutton, C. R. Noble, W. H. Bowles, R. H. Pace, L. N. Arnall, and W. J. Kimbrough, active. Interment will be made in Riverview Cemetery.
