Charles Lewis Hindenburg, 78, well known and honored elderly resident of this community, where he has lived for over 50 years, passed away Thursday noon at the Sycamore hospital, following an extended period of ill health, due to a heart condition and bronchial asthma.

He was born in Des Plaines on November 7, 1873, the son of Joseph and Sophie [sic] Hindenburg. When he was three years old, he moved to Genoa with his parents, here attending the Lutheran parochial school. On July 27, 1897, he was united in marriage to Edith Wallis of DeKalb, the wedding taking place in the old St. John's Lutheran church in Sycamore. All their married years were spent in this city. Mr. Hindenburg was first employed at Patten's Foundry, later served as a mechanic at the Butzow Brothers Garage and lastly at Anaconda Wire and Cable Co., where he was an employee for many years, retiring from there in 1945 with a pension.

Mr. Hindenburg was a man of the highest ideals and was respected by all who knew him. He was very devoted to his home and family, and was a kind neighbor and trustworthy friend. His church was also of great interest to him and throughout his life gave generously of his time and money for its welfare. He had been a devout and active member of St. John's English Lutheran church here, for many years, having been the oldest member there, in terms of church membership. He had served for several years, as the Sunday School superintendent, had been secretary, also a deacon and at the time of his death, was an honorary elder.

Mr. Hindenburg was also a great lover of flowers and spent many happy hours in cultivating them.

Left to mourn his death are his devoted wife, Edith and children: Mrs. Fred (Harriett) Duval, Genoa; Major Irving Hindenburg, Shelby, Ohio; William Hindenburg, Sycamore; Mrs. Carl (Ellen) Peplow, Sycamore; and Warrant Officer Paul Hindenburg, Sycamore; also 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Bertha Hibbard, Oak Park.

Preceding him in death were three children, Joseph, Ruth and Mrs. Dorothy McNeely, also a brother, Gust and a sister, Minnie.

Final rites are to be accorded Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock at Johnson-Van Natta Funeral Home and at 1:30 o'clock from St. John's English Lutheran church with the Rev. R. T. Eissfeldt officiating.

Interment will take place in the Elmwood cemetery here.

Friends may call at the local funeral home until time of services.
