A gathering will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2007, at the Ainsworth Garden House in Oregon City for John C. Guthrie, who died April 11 at age 91.

Mr. Guthrie was born March 21, 1916, in Schenectady, N.Y. He graduated from Williams College and received a master's degree from Columbia University. During World War II, he was a member of the British battalion that defended Hong Kong and was held as a prisoner of war by the Japanese for 44 months.
.
He was a career diplomat for the U.S. State Department for about 26 years, including as second in command of the U.S. Embassy in Saigon during the Vietnam War and chief liaison between President Johnson and Ho Chi Minh. He later served in Thailand and Sweden, and retired as consul general in South Africa.

He retired to Beavercreek in the early 1980s. In 1945, he married Audrea Barthol; they divorced. He married Barbara Smith Ihrig in 1973; she died in 1982.
.
Survivors include his son, Bill; stepdaughters, Dathy Chadwick and Mary Goecke; stepsons, Peter Ihrig and Tom Ihrig; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
