Sometime between 1930 and 1935, Bert moved to Chicago and eventually worked as a sales clerk. There he met Edna Rae Hathaway, who had graduated from Englewood High School in Chicago. They were married on June 13, 1936, at St. James Catholic Church, with a reception in the home of Edna’s parents. Afterwards they went to Bert’s home state of Kentucky for their honeymoon, before setting up home in Chicago.
They had two children, Loretta Jean and Richard Raymond. In 1944 Edna became ill with meningitis and died, leaving the children without a mother. Sometime later Bert married Patricia Smith. In 1957, Loretta married Frank Louis of Chicago and moved to Champaign, Illinois, where her husband was a university student, and later settled in Wisconsin. Richard married Gloria Wisniewski, and they settled in Pennsylvania. Bert died in Chicago in 1986.
