Irene S. Bowden, 84, wife of the late Arthur Bowden and a resident of the Hermitage of the Eastern Shore, Onancock, formerly of Chincoteague, died Saturday, March 18, 2006. Born Oct. 4, 1921 in Modest Town, she was the daughter of the late Leonard M. Savage and Laura Bunting Savage. She was raised on Chincoteague and lived in Norfolk, Va., from 1940 to 1964. While there she was a member of Larchmont Baptist Church. She later moved to Upper Marlboro, Md., near Washington, D.C., where she worked as a Naval Contract Negotiator. Her husband worked for the Coast Guard as a Contract Negotiator. While there they belonged to Upper Marlboro Baptist Church. She and her husband retired to Chincoteague. She was a member of Union Baptist Church, Chincoteague, Fidelis Sunday School Class, and Union Baptist Church Ladies Aide. She volunteered with Hospice of the Eastern Shore and Deborah Hospital. A graveside funeral service will be held Thursday, March 23, at 11 a.m. at Modest Town Cemetery, Modest Town, with the Rev. McKnight officiating. Mrs. Bowden is survived by a son, Leonard Bowden of Hilo, Hawaii; a grandson, Seth Rubin Bowden and wife Brahmani Houston, of San Francisco, Calif.; a sister, Flossie Northam of Modest Town; and several nieces and nephews. Arrangements were made by Salyer Funeral Home, Chincoteague.
