Edward "Papa Ed" Theodore Voit, age 88, died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, the 7th of October 2014. He was born on the 14th of November 1925 in Ridgewood, Queens, New York and attended school at PS81 and graduated Brooklyn Polytechnic College with a degree in engineering and also attended the University of Houston. Ed served in the US Army from 1943 to 1945 and was a prisoner of war in the last few months of World War II.
He worked for Grumman Aerospace, later Northrup Grumman, for 37 years. Some of his proudest accomplishments came after he and his wife, Hilda moved to Houston in the sixties. Grumman sent him to NASA to work on the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing Module and later to help train space shuttle astronauts using the Grumman aircraft. He also led the design of the tail hook on the Navy F14 fighter jet.
Ed attended Covenant Church in Houston. He was a loving, kind, generous, sweet, honest, brave, strong, motivated, caring man and above all he always considered others before himself. He will remain forever a fond memory to all who knew and loved him. Some of his favorite hobbies were making family movies and traveling.
Edward is preceded in death by wife, Hilda Primosch Voit, his sister and brother-in law, Tillie and Ed Ebert. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Barbara Voit and her sister, June Weiss of Denver, Colorado; his children, Regan and Lynn Voit, South Carolina; his daughter Teresa and Joe Pierce of Houston; his granddaughter Monica Pierce and two great grandchildren, April and Mason Wilson, his son Gary and Adrienne Voit; his granddaughter, Beth and Chris Choate and their daughter, Emily; their daughter, Ashley and Chris Ford. His daughter Leigh and husband Joe Bogar, their children Kris and Kate Bogar, and his son, Mark and his wife Stephanie Hamilton, their sons Henry, Robert, and Michael. His niece, Irene and Don Stern and their children, Bob and Lisa Stern, Don and Pam Stern and Kerry and Dave Dukinfield.
A memorial service is to be conducted at eleven o'clock in the morning on Friday, the 10th of October, in the Jasek Chapel of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at a venue to be announced during the services.
Prior to the service the family will have gathered for a private interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
In lieu of customary remembrances, contributions in Edward's memory may be directed to The National Kidney Foundation , 30 East 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016; or to Covenant Church, c/o Financial Administrator, 4990 Caroline St., Houston, TX 77004.
