John was an entrepreneur and owned one of the first Halls (we believe it may have been a Masonic Hall, one of the first black owned funeral homes Earle Undertaking aka Heilig Funeral Home and presently W.H.Johnson Funeral Home. He owned land and property in Arkansas. He left North Carolina and moved to Arkansas in the late 1800 ' s and became a successful business man.
