Frank Brown was about nineteen and Nancy Unknown was about fifteen when they married in 1852.

Their first four children were born in South Carolina, they moved to Georgia before their son, James was born in 1865 and moved to Tennessee before their daughter, Mary was born in 1867.

The 1870 census of July 25, revealed Frank was a smelter hand and they lived in District 8, Polk County, Tennessee. Their post office was in Hiwassee. They were born in Georgia and could not read or write. Household members: F. M. Brison (37), Nancy (33), Sarah (17), Jefferson (15), George W. (13), John (10), James (5), Mary (3) and Manuel (1).

They lived in Georgia when their daughter, Lilly was born in 1871.

Marriage Bond record of November 8, 1891 in Anderson County, Tennessee revealed Frank M. Brown and J. H. Williams would owe the sum of $1250 if Frank M. Brown and Mrs. Alice Sweiswood did not marry.

Frank was about fifty-eight and Alice was about twenty-five when they married. Alice's maiden name was McGill.

The 1900 census of June 9, revealed Frank was a coal miner and they rented their home in District 7, Anderson County, Tennessee. Frank and his parents were born in Georgia. Frank was born in June 1839 and Alice was born in February 1860. They could not read or write. They had been married eight years, Alice had nine children and six were still living. Household members: Frank Brown (60), Alice (44), Robert (21), Patterick (11), Minnie (11), Charley (6), Laura (4) and Roya (3).

The 1910 census of April 24, revealed Frank was a laborer of odd jobs and they rented their home on New River Road in District 7, Anderson County, Tennessee. Frank had been married three times and Alice had been married two times. They had been married sixteen years, Alice had ten children and seven were still living. Household members: Frank Brown (65), Alice (43), Laura (14), Roy (12) and Lizzie (9).

The Civil War Pension Application filed in Anderson County, Tennessee on May 11, 1909 was rejected on August 31 1911. The application #11247 revealed Frank M. Brown enlisted in the Confederate Army at Blairsville, Georgia in May 1862 under Col. Hart and Capt. Butt. He was a soldier in Co F, 6th Georgia Calvary. Frank claimed he contracted Rheumatism during his service. When General Lee surrendered (April 1865), his group was taken to Cartersville, Georgia where he received his discharge but later lost it. Frank was born in Georgia in 1844, had lived in Tennessee thirty-five years, his wife was 40 years old and they had two sons & two daughters between ages 15 and 6. Research revealed his commanders were dead and they could not contact any soldiers he served with to verify his service. The War Department only found a report that he was absent without leave in December 1863 and could not find any record that he was discharged.
