James Nathan Maxwell was born to William Maxwell and Mary "Polly" Vannoy. When he was only 2-years old, his father William Maxwell died. His mother Mary remarried shortly after to a man named Benjamin Woodson. James also had two older brothers (sons of William & Polly Maxwell) who were: John C. Maxwell and Albert Preston Maxwell. James grew up in Indian Township, Pike County, Missouri.

On the 24 January 1870, James married Mary Ann Renner in Pike County, Missouri. His first wife died one year later on the 17 September 1871 in Pike County, Missouri. She is buried at the Concord Cemetery.

Two years later, he married Mary Eliza Rutherford on 6 February 1873 in Pike County, Missouri. James and his 2nd wife Mary Eliza Rutherford were distantly related. Mary's mother was Margaret Ann Vannoy who was the daughter of Nathan Day Vannoy. Nathan Day Vannoy was James' uncle, because his mother Mary "Polly" Vannoy was Nathan Day Vannoy's sister.

In Pike County, Missouri, James and Mary's first child was born and lived for only one month. Little Nathan A. Maxwell is buried at the Kilby Cemetery.

In 1876, James sold his land near Bowling Green, Missouri and took his family to California by wagon. They lived near Downey, California for a time before moving to Fresno, California.

James and Mary made their home in Fresno, California. He built a two-story house with a big porch and an outhouse. James had a talent for building. Not only did he build his home, but also the one-room school that his grandson Arthur Maxwell attended.

In James' old age he became deaf. It was an exceptional challenge for him and Mary, because Mary had gone blind. James was a good man who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren. His beloved wife Mary Eliza (Rutherford) Maxwell died before him. James later moved in with his daughter Myrtie and died there.
