R. J. Bettis Jr., son of Reuben J. Bettis Sr. and Esther Samuelson Bettis was born July 15, 1917 at Scandia and died October 24, 2001 at Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, at the age of 84.


He received his education in the public schools and attended business college in Topeka, for two years. He served with the US Army during World War II. He was a retired Rural Mail Carrier.


He was united in marriage to Bertha Gleason and one son Fred Gleason. He was united in marriage to Mayson Kirkland in September 1963.


He was a member of Central Christian Church, Belleville and Robert E. Gordon American Legion Post No. 133, Belleville.


He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Elwin and Lee and three sisters, Hazel Martin, Dorothy Gascon and Helen Dueringer.


He is survived by his wife, Mayson Bettis, Belleville; one stepson, Rodney Kelley, Ft. Walton Beach, FL; four grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.


Memorial services were held, October 27, 2001, Central Christian Church, Belleville, conducted by Reverend Robert Hovorka. Inurnment was made in Riverview Cemetery, Scandia.
