Norman attended the University of Vermont, Class of 1837 and earned a Doctor of Divinity (DD) degree and began his religious calling as a Protestant Episcopal minister in 1839 at Derby Line; there he formed a small congregation and built St. John's Church. He was always moving to service a church that needed his help; consequently, his children were born in many states. He was the rector of Trinity Church in Yazoo City, MS in 1847 and then was rector at Christ Church in Indianapolis from 1849 to 1852. He was the first rector of Trinity Church in Hoboken, NJ in 1853. His last calling was rector of St. Andrew's Parish (1239 H St.) in Washington, D. C.
Norman served in the Civil War. He was a Chaplain to the 4th NJ Infantry from 17 Aug 1861 to 9 May 1863. He resigned to accept commission as Hospital Chaplain for US Vols. on 29 May 1863.
