Wells built his plantation home ca 1826, and the 8th generation is still living in the home and farming the land. The planation was known as The Elms. The farm is located along Fishing Creek, which is the northern boundary of Edgecombe County, NC. The small town of Whitakers is divided by a railroad track between Edgecombe and Nash Counties, NC. From Wells' home it is a short walk to Halifax County. His home is also located 1.4 miles from the crossroads of "Draughn". James and Elizabeth Wells Draughon, parents of Wells, also had their farm in this area.
