Hastings resident, John A. Schiefelbein, 82, passed away Friday, October 10, 2014 at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings, Nebraska.

Rosary will be Thursday, October 16, 2014; 7:00 P.M. at Livingston Butler Volland Chapel, Hastings. Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, October 17, 2014; 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Hastings with Father Joseph M. Walsh officiating. Burial with military rites by Hastings Veterans Organizations will be in Parkview Cemetery, Hastings, Nebraska. Visitation will be Thursday, October 16, 2014; 9:00 A.M. – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to mass at the church. Memorials may be given to Hastings Catholic Schools Trust or Start Over Rover.

John Anthony Schiefelbein was born November 20, 1931 in Adams County Nebraska to John J. and Agnes M. (Gerten) Schiefelbein. He graduated from Roseland High School in 1950. John marriedWauneta Grabillon November 18, 1961 in Seward, Nebraska. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War from March 5, 1951 to March 2, 1955. John was proud of his service and was recognized as the Grand-Marshal for the 2012 Veterans Recognition Parade in Adams County. John was also honored to participate as a member of the Korean War Veterans Honor Flight to Washington, DC in March 2014. John was a salesman for Pepsi for nearly 40 years before he retired in 1993. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, trapping, and working on small engines. He was very active in and helped organize the Downtown Farmers’ Market. John was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, VFW, DAV, American Legion, Eagles, Knights of Columbus, and was a longtime member of the Adams County Burial Detail.

John was preceded in death by his parents, John & Agnes Schiefelbein; son, Michael Howard; and siblings, Verena Paluska, Myron Schiefelbein, Jerome Schiefelbein, Dennis Schiefelbein, Johanna Utecht-Clausen, Julia Utecht, and Edwin Schiefelbein.
