Man Killed In Media Crash
Samuel J. Reeves, 64, president of the Phoenix Iron Company, of Phoenixville, and a resident of Bryn Mawr, was killed almost instantly early this morning when his car crashed into the stone wall surrounding the Media cemetery, at Orange street and Kirk road, Upper Providence Township.
Reeves, who was traveling alone, was believed by police to have been returning from a business trip to Washington. The road on which he was driving is a short cut from the Baltimore Pike to the Bryn Mawr section.
P.J. Harvey, a resident of the vicinity, discovered the accident and notified Media police, who in turn summoned John Duffy, Upper Providence police, and Matthew McCarty Nether Providence police.
Reeves was taken to Media Hospital by the Media Fire Company Ambulance and was pronounced dead on arrival by Deputy Coroner William Patterson.
Police believe he either fell asleep at the wheel, or became confused by heavy fog. The accident occurred at 1:20 a.m. Cause of death was said to be a hemorrhage of the left lung which was punctured by the steering wheel and by two broken ribs.
Reeves, who resided at Darby and Paoli roads, Bryn Mawr, had been president of the Phoenix Iron Company for the past twenty years, succeeding his father, the late David Reeves. The company, which employs about 1600 persons, is Phoenixville's main industry.
A native of Philadelphia, Reeves is a graduate of Yale University, class of 1903. He is survived by his widow Lucille Carter Reeves; a son, David, a student at Episcopal Academy; two daughters, Elise F., in New York and Lucille S. at home, and a brother, William H. Reeves, of Phoenixville, who is expected to come to Media today to complete funeral arrangements.
