Susan Ella Hungerford's father, George Bloomer Hungerford, died in 1875 and her mother, Mary Jane (Straw) Salter Hungerford, had epileptic episodes and could not care for Susan Ella and her sister Lilly. John & Elizabeth (Fry) Sampson adopted Susan Ella in March of 1876. Susan Ella Hungerford became Susan Ella Sampson. Her adoptive father was a hardware merchant in Yipsilanti, Washtenaw Co., MI. They later moved to California.
