LEOMINSTER, MA – Leo (Dick) R. Miller, 89, of Leominster, MA, passed away October 13, 2014, at The Apple Valley Center in Ayer, MA.

He is survived by two daughters, Lisa Elder and her husband, Jim of Ashburnham, Leslie Blair and her husband, Chris of Leominster; two sons, Leonard (Lenny) Miller and his wife, Cindi of Gardner, and Lawrence (Larry) Miller of Hubbardston; and a daughter-in-law, Laurie Garvey of Harvard, four grandchildren, Jennifer Miller, Andrew Miller, Joshua Blair and Justin Blair; and two step-grandchildren, Carolyn Garvey and Andrew Lindskog, many nieces and nephews.

Leo is predeceased by his wife of 59 years, Rose M. Miller, who passed away on September 12th, 2014 a brother, Vernon (Pete) Miller and three sisters, Theresa Perry, Yula Gibson and Lorraine Jackson.

Leo was born in Leominster on November 27, 1924 to the late Leo & Ida (Albert) Miller. He attended Leominster schools. Leo joined the US Navy during WWII and served as Seaman First Class on the USS Anthony DD515 Destroyer from the time it was launched from Bath, ME on 12/20/1942 until 12/27/1945. He earned the American Area Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon with 5 stars, and the WWII Victory Medal.

Following the Navy, Leo was a heavy Construction equipment operator. He worked for many years at Crowley Corporation until he started his own business, Miller Tractor Service, in the 1960’s.

Leo was also a skilled mechanic and all around fix-it man. Until his illness in 2010, you could always find him in his garage fixing someone’s car, lawnmower, snowblower, etc.

Leo was a lifelong member of the Leominster Sportsmen Club.

He loved hunting and fishing, especially with his brother Pete and his sons. He was a communicant of Holy Family of Nazareth Church.

Leo enjoyed playing cards, going to dances with Rose and their group of friends. His greatest joy was spending time with family, telling stories, and teaching his grandchildren how to fish.

His family would like to thank the entire staff of The Apple Valley Center for their superb care provided to Leo, and kindness to our family over the past three years.

Funeral Information

MILLER -- Calling hours will be held in the Wright-Roy Funeral Home, 109 West St., Leominster, MA, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, on Thursday October 16, 2014, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 pm in the funeral home. Burial with Military Honors will be at 2:00 pm in Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 111 Glen Allen Rd., Winchendon, MA.
