GARDNER R. HESSEL

Garner (sic) Dies In Hospital Early Monday
FRANCIS CREEK—Garner (sic) (Gardy) Hessel, associated for almost a quarter of a century with his father in the operation of Hessel’s, widely known dining establishment, died early Monday morning at Holy Family Hospital.
Mr. Hessel, 47, had been a hospital patient 10 days but had been ill the past two years.

Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville, and at 10 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church in this village. The Rev. Joseph Rauch will officiate at the solemn requiem high Mass and burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Hessel was born in this village on Jan 31, 1908, a son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Hessel. He obtained his grammar school in the village and then attended St. Norbert High School at DePere where he was graduated in 1926.

“Gardy,” as he was known, was employed by the Standard Oil Co. of Francis Creek from high school graduation until 1932. He married the former Grace Stoneman on Sept. 15, 1931, and shortly thereafter joined with his father in the operation of the C. J. Hessel dining room, tavern
and bowling alleys. The dining room was established by his parents in 1906 and is well known for the family style chicken dinners which are served.

Mr. Hessel was a third degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 710 of Manitowoc, a member of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin for 30 years, and the Holy Name Society of St. Ann Church. His other affiliations included St. Ann choir for more than 20 years, Elks Lodge
of Two Rivers, the Manitowoc County Barbershop Chorus, and Manitowoc County Sheriff and Deputy Sheriffs Assn. Mr. Hessel served for three years as a member of the board of directors of the Wisconsin State Proprietors Bowling Assn.

Surviving are his wife; a son (private); and a daughter (private); parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Hessel of the village; two brothers, Paul of Two Rivers and Richard of Fond Du Lac; and a sister, Mrs. Larry Axel of the village.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 p.m. Tuesday. The rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 8 p.m. Tuesday by the Holy Name Society and at 8 p.m. Wednesday by Father Rauch and the Knights of Columbus.
