Henrietta MacInnes Barrett (1832-1915) Henrietta MacInnes was born in the highlands of Fort Augustus, Scotland but emigrated to Canada with her family when she was just a girl. There, she met and married Joseph Barrett. In 1856, the Barretts came to California and settled on the Merced River where they built a store and “bank” to serve the miners. In the late 1870s, Henrietta and Joseph moved their family from Barrett’s Ferry (2 miles upstream from the Exchequer Dam) to Merced Falls. Together, they grew grape vines and decorated their property with fragrant shrubs and fruit trees. Joseph and Henrietta made a good team. Joseph engaged in farming while Henrietta helped run the lodging business out of their two-story family home. They had seven children: Florence, Elizabeth, George, Hugh, Caroline, Isabelle, and Harry. From Merced County Courthouse Museum
