William's wife Maria Johanna Vander Beek (1869-1957) was the third of five children born to Gysbert Vander Beek and Emmeke Bax. The Branderhorst ancestry can be traced to the French Huguenots in 1713 while the Vander Beek ancestry traces back to the Cossacks from southern Russia in 1700.

William and Maria arrived in the U.S. in 1908 with their family of thirteen, the oldest of whom was Pearl, 19 years. The youngest was Lambert, three months.
