"Sylvester attended the old State Street High School in Columbus in 1857, then taught school for nine years. He then participated in the Civil War. After being discharged he spent a time on a farm recouperating from the effects of the war. His plan was to become a lawyer but instead he took up the practice of medicine, graduating from the Eclectic Medical College of Cincinnati in 1875; practicing at Garrett, Indiana for eight years, the rest of his practice was in Columbus where his office was located at 1103 Mt. Vernon Avenue for forty years.
On April 9, 1865 he married Miss Lemira Ann Shoemaker who was born in Columbus, the daughter of Christopher and Sarah A. Shoemaker, his wife died in 1911. From this union were born twelve children; Rose married Judge Isaac Humphrey, William who was three when he died, Christopher E. Sherman who was a professor at Ohio State University, Dr. Edward C. Sherman, a dentist in Hollywood, CA, Oliver C. Sherman, a farmer, Cynthia Ellen Sherman who married John C. Howard, Lydia Grace Sherman, a teacher, John King Sherman, a civil engineer on the Pennsylvania Railroad, James Garfield Sherman, died at Boston, MA in 1924, he had been a physician and surgeon and had worked with his father for some fifteen years, Sylvester Morrill Sherman Jr., a civil engineer with the Illinois Central Railroad and a veteran of WWI, serving in France and reaching the rank of Captain, Sarah Ruth Sherman married George R. Schoedinger and Lemira Ann Sherman who married George B. Gascoyne."

Son of Levi Huckill Sherman who was born 22 Apr 1809 in Ohio County, VA, now WV and died 13 Mar 1850 in CA and Lydia Gay Morrill. Levi and Lydia married on 9 Dec 1838

Sylvester married second Amanda Jane Hance on 29 Jun 1915 at Barnesville, Belmont, OH.
