Edward's paternal grandparents were Captain Edward Spain and Ann Elizabeth Drain Spain. He never met them as they both passed away before his birth. Little is known about his potential paternal uncles and aunts. His parents, George and Elizabeth Reynolds Spain, as well as his brother, Henry, sadly died during the yellow fever epidemic of 1798 in Wilmington, Delaware when he was 2 years old. After the death of their parents, Edward and his surviving brother, Richard Reynolds Spain, were brought up by their Aunt and Uncle Reynolds in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Reynolds family were Quakers and brought Edward and Richard up as Quakers as well. Edward, along with his wife Sarah Church Hall Spain, was buried in United American Mechanics Cemetery. In 1951, all the graves were moved from that cemetery and their headstones were supposedly buried along with the caskets in Philadelphia Memorial Park, though there is some speculation that the headstones were instead used for the foundation of the Walt Whitman Bridge. Edward and Sarah Church Hall Spain had 10 children together.
