Roy H. Beaton of Sequim, Washington, passed away peacefully at the Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles, WA, on January 7, 2007. Roy was born in Boston, MA, on September 1, 1916, to Howard J. and Mary Eva (LaVoie) Beaton. He graduated from Stoughton High School in Stoughton, MA, in 1934, and subsequently received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University in 1939, a Doctorate in Engineering from Yale University in 1942, and an Honorary Doctor of Science from Northeastern University in 1967. On July 22, 1939, Roy married Margaret (Peg) Marchant. They were married for 39 years before her death in 1978. Roy later married his present wife, Leora Schier Beaton, in 1982. They would have celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary this June.
During World War II, Roy was involved in the Manhattan Project from its earliest days with the E.I. DuPont Company at the University of Chicago, at Oak Ridge, TN, and later at Hanford, WA. In 1946, he joined the General Electric Company at Hanford, WA, where he became General Manager of all Nuclear Plant Design and Construction Programs.
In 1957, Roy became General Manager of GE's Neutron Devices Department in Milwaukee, WI, and St. Petersburg, FL, and, in 1963, General Manager of the GE Spacecraft Department at Valley Forge Space Technology Center outside Philadelphia, PA. Between 1964 and 1968, Roy served as General Manager of the GE Apollo Systems Department at Daytona Beach and Cape Kennedy, FL, Houston, TX, and Huntsville, AL. His role with this program led to his receipt of a NASA Public Service Award for assisting in the successful lunar landing of Apollo 11.
In 1968, Roy became Vice President and General Manager of the GE Electronics Systems in Syracuse, NY, followed in 1974 with his appointment as Vice President and General Manager of GE's new Energy Systems Division in San Jose, CA, where he became Senior Vice President in 1979. During this period, Roy was responsible for all of the GE Company's Nuclear Energy activities on a worldwide basis. In September 1981, he retired after 35 years of service with the General Electric Company.
Roy was a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemists and American Association for the Advancement of Science, and held membership in the National Academy of Engineering, American Ordnance Association, American Nuclear Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, American Astronautical Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Navy League of the United States, Air Force Association, Society of Military Engineers, Tau Beta Pi and Sigma XI. He was a registered Professional Engineer in the states of Washington, Wisconsin and California. Roy was also a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Sequim, WA.
Roy is survived by his wife Leora; his daughter, Constance Beaton Fegley and husband Randall of Sinking Springs, PA; his son, Roy Beaton, Jr. and wife Susie of Evergreen, CO; stepchildren Patricia G. Briselden of Hot Springs, AR, Susan L. Craig of Wenatchee, WA, and Mary R. Rieber of Lilburn, GA, and their spouses; his brother Robert Beaton of Upper Marlboro, MD; his sister Pearl Gunn and husband George of Center Tuftonboro, NH; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
