Tom was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. His father was the local Judge in Dayton, Ohio. He joined the U.S. Navy along with his twin brother John. Tom was assigned to the heavy cruiser USS Astoria. The Astoria was sunk during a fierce night time attack by the Japanese Navy and airforce just off Savo Island in the South Pacific. Tom was badly injured and just by fate was put aboard the USS.President Jackson his brother John's ship where he received a much needed blood transfusion from his twin brother. After the war he married the Navy nurse that brought him back to health. He engaged in real estate investments in Arizona and Washington state.
