Angelita G. Montoya, age 99 of San Pablo, entered into eternal life on Friday, Oct. 17, 2014 surrounded by her loving family at La Posada – Mesilla Valley Hospice.

Angelita was born third in a group of 11 siblings on Oct. 2, 1915 on the Alvarez Farm in Mesilla, to Nacienceno Garcia and Barbarita Alvarez. Just a few short weeks ago she celebrated her 99th birthday. Angelita was baptized, confirmed, made her first communion, and married in, what is now, the Basilica of San Albino-- where she was a faithful parishioner all her life. She married Ramón F. Montoya on Jan. 7, 1933 and little did they know at that time --what a bountiful family they would create. Together, Angelita and Ramón had seven children, 27 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 24 great-great grandchildren for a total of 98 progeny in all.

Angelita knew the definition of an honest day's work. From a very young age she helped raise her brothers. At the age of 14 she went to work on a dairy farm away from the family, in Socorro, TX, where she started her mornings at 4:00 a.m. every day milking cows. Once married, she and her husband Ramón owned and worked their farms and Angelita became known for her unfailing work ethic --often out-picking most men in the cotton fields. Together they owned a family business, Montoya's Groceries, in a small village outside of Mesilla, what is now known as San Pablo. Eventually Angelita and Ramon managed their own 90-acre farm raising cotton, alfalfa, vegetables, horses, and chickens. Her brothers' and sisters' families still manage pecan, chilé, cotton, and honey farms in Mesilla and Leasburg, NM today. She also worked and retired from Las Cruces Public Schools after more than 35 years in food services.

Angelita is now reunited in heaven with her beloved family members including Ramón (husband), Barbara (daughter), Luis Garcia (brother), Maria Casares (sister), Vidal "Lalo" Garcia (brother), Lupe Garcia (brother), Refugio "Cuco" Garcia (brother), Nacienceno "Cheno" Garcia (brother), Lorraine Montoya (granddaughter), Maya Rae Avalos (great-granddaughter), and Brandon Walter Avalos (great-grandson). Her spirit is carried on by her siblings: Juanita Girón, Matilde Estrada, Felipe Garcia, and Arsario "Chayo" Garcia; her children: Anastacio "Tacho" Montoya (Martha), Cruzita Martinez, Luis S. Montoya, Margarita G. Montoya, Ysidro "Chilo" Montoya (Norma), Alicia Montoya-Asher and many much loved nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014 at Baca's Funeral Chapels, 300 E. Boutz Road. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will begin at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014 at the Basilica Of San Albino, 2280 Calle Principal in Mesilla. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014 in the same church with the Reverend Richard A. Catanach, Celebrant. The Rite of Committal and Interment will follow in San Albino Cemetery where she will be laid to rest next to her husband in the family plot.

The Montoya Family has entrusted their loved one to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels of Las Cruces. For online condolences logon to www.bacasfuneralchapelslascruces.com.
