Gilbert Mitchell Hair was born on September 4, 1815 in Pigeon Creek, Washington County, Pennsylvania. His parents were James Hair and Rebeckah McKown. Gilbert graduated from Wahington College in 1838. He was married two times. His first wife was Jane Morton Semple (daughter of John M. Semple and Margaretta Whiteside of Steubenville, Ohio). They were married on November 13, 1838 in Guernsey County, Ohio. Gilbert and Jane had five children named Martha Lucia (Mrs. William Fletcher Spurgin), Mary Ibela (Mrs. Samuel Hamilton Stewart), Margaretta Semple (Mrs. John I. Underwood), Benjamin Morton, and Eliza Jane (died in infancy). After the death Gilbert's first wife, he married Eliza Jane Naylor on March 12, 1850 in Warren County, Ohio. They had three daughters named Eliza Jane, Emma Belle (Mrs. Hezekiah Douthitt Gamble, Jr.), and Unknown. Gilbert was a Presbyterian minister at various places. He died on June 3, 1884 at the home of his daughter (Mrs. Martha Surgeon) in West Point, New York. The funeral was held at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Gamble, in Pittsburgh.
