Obituary

Abby Holcomb Jones of Clinton, MS passed away Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at The Arbor in Ridgeland, MS. Visitation will be held on Friday, October 24, 2014 from 11:30-1:00 pm at Lakewood Funeral Home on Clinton Boulevard followed by a graveside service at 1:00 pm at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Abby was born in Quitman, MS on July 2, 1916, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Edgar Holcomb. After receiving her early education in Tupelo, she graduated from Mississippi Woman’s College (now William Carey University) during the time that her father was president of the college. She then did graduate work at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

She married Charles Rowland Jones in 1940. The couple had an only child, a daughter, Rowland. The family moved to various posts during World War II to fill Mr. Jones’ military assignments and then, in civilian life, to several cities for his retail management positions. Mrs. Jones taught English and Latin on the high school and junior college levels during this time. She always retained a deep interest in books, schools and libraries. When the family retired to Clinton, Mrs. Jones was a member of First Baptist Church and also attended Northside Baptist Church.

Abby was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her two sisters, Jean Holcomb Turner and Betty Holcomb Bass. She is survived by her daughter, Rowland Jones Roberts and her husband Dr. Lloyd Roberts of Clinton; a grandson Charles Gilmore Martin and his wife Anisa of Clinton; a great-granddaughter Alizabeth Martin of Clinton; a brother William Edgar Holcomb and his wife Betsy of Oxford; nieces Elizabeth Raulston of Madison and Jean Shuttleworth of Hendersonville, TN; nephews Richard Turner of Jackson, Dr. Bill Holcomb of Birmingham, AL, Rick Bass of Madison and Robert Bass of Jackson; and a step-granddaughter Angie Roberts Plunkett and her husband Clayton and their children, Jessica Gunn and her husband Andrew, Brittany Poole and Hannah Plunkett, all of Clinton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mississippi College School of Business, P. O. Box 4005, Clinton, MS 39058 or to Northside Baptist Church, 1475 Northside Drive, Clinton, MS 39056. An online guest registry is available at www.lakewoodfuneralhomes.com.
