William John Bowen, son of William Bowen and Sarah Miles, was a native of Coalbrookdale, Shropshire, England. He immigrated to the United States as a toddler with his mother Sarah and siblings Anna and Martha, arriving in New York on the steamship Helvetia on 16 Oct 1882. His father William appears to have arrived earlier that year, in April of 1882. The family settled in Mercer County, New Jersey. At least one more sibling was added to the family, Lilly, who was born in 1886 in Chambersburg. William's mother Sarah died in 1890 in Hamilton. His father's whereabouts following his mother's death remain uncertain. However, at the time of the 1900 census enumeration, William Jr resided with his married sister Anna and her family.
On 30 Jan 1904, William married Margaret Knowles, daughter of John and Annie Knowles. They were the parents of a son, John Edward Bowen. William was widowed in 1958. He died at age 86 and was interred in the cemetery that was the resting place of his wife's Knowles family, the Wrightstown Friends Meeting Cemetery in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
Sources include England birth and baptismal records, census records, passenger lists, World War I and II draft registration cards, the Social Security Death Index, and the Trenton Evening Times 5 Feb 1904 and 26 Jun 1966.
