Captain Ralph W. Christie, USN, Commander Task Force 42 and Submarine Squadron Five, Congratulates Lieutenant Commander John R. Moore, USN, Commanding Officer of USS S-44 (SS-155), " as he returned to this South Pacific base after a very successful week of patrol activity".
John Raymond "Dinty" Moore received the Navy Cross (Presidential authorization required) for his leadership of S-44 in three successful war patrols. He sank the Heavy Cruiser Kako on August 10, 1942. He went on to command the USS Sailfish (SS-192). He was placed on the Roll of Honor by Admiral Lockwood in May of 1944. He was ultimately retired in 1958 as a Rear Admiral.
