Lydia Elms Sturtevant was born in 1835 on Nantucket Island to Noah and Angeline Sturtevant. She grew up in East Boston where her father was a prominent merchant. In 1854, she married a business partner of her father's, a young man from Philadelphia, named Thomas Harrison Riley. Thomas managed the Philadelphia branch of Noah Sturtevant and Company, a coal business. Lydia and Thomas had two children, Lena and Thomas, Jr. In 1858, her husband died at 31 of typhoid leaving her with their two very young children. Not long after his death, Lydia moved in with her parents back in East Boston. Sadly there were more unfortunate events to come. Her father, Noah, was killed in 1861 when his carriage was stuck by a train and her mother, Angeline, died in 1865. At the age of 37, Lydia herself succumbed to typhoid. She is buried in Woodlands Cemetery in Philadelphia next to her husband n the Riley plot
