Son of John and Bridget Sweeney of Killy Gordon, Donegal County, Ireland.

Emigrated to America in 1874. Stayed in Philadelphia, PA until abt. 1882. Anthony practiced his trade of Bartender while there. He and his brother would go to Missouri where his brother Edward would go into the Mercantile Store business. Anthony would go on to Texarkana, Arkansas about 1882-83 and was a well known resident of early Texarkana, Ark. Anthony was first a policeman. Found articles showing some of his actions..One of shooting a burglar and another of himself being shot while breaking up a fist fight!

Anthony later went into the Saloon Business. Owned Sweeney's Capitol Saloon at 306 East Broad St, Texarkana,Arkansas.(My father told me abt. the Sweeney Saloon...The typical saloon of the day , with saw dust floors and with large cuspidor's!)

Anthony owned this business from abt. 1886 until abt. 1912 when the voters shut down the alcohol business.

Anthony would then have to retire and died in 1926. Married to Mary Ann Murry on 16 Nov 1886 in Texarkana, Ark. They had six children, five sons and one daughter.

Edit* after reading what my father wrote, Anthony was NOT a police officer. There was another Sweeney by the name of W.H. Sweeney ... could be a cousin or brother?

The saloon was shut down in 1910 when voters decided to make the county dry. He joined the Knights of Columbus and was an active member till the day he died.
