Mr. Morrissey, a former principal of the Kiel High school, resigned as head of the Chilton school system in 1935. He lived in retirement at 61 Lincoln Avenue, Chilton, for the past 15 years.
Born Jan. 1, 1866, in the town of Franklin, Manitowoc County, he attended the rural schools and, through his own efforts, mastered collegiate studies to earn a life-time teachers certificate. Later, he attended the University of Wisconsin and Cornell University at Ithaca, N. Y. He was appointed, principal of the Kiel High school in 1892 when he was only 26 years old, and served in that capacity until 1899 when he was named school superintendent at Chilton. In addition to his administrative duties, Mr. Morrissey was an instructor of science and history. Last fall, the Chilton city council, by a formal vote, named the new Chilton High school athletic field in his honor. It was called Morrissey Field.
Mr. Morrissey was a member of the Masonic lodge for 51 years and was an active member of the Chilton Kiwanis club.
Well informed as an historian, he was in wide demand as a public speaker for many years.
Survivors are his wife, the former Emma Rothmann, to whom he was married on Aug. 7, 1901, and two sons, Donald R. Appleton, and Atty. G. Winfield Morrissey, Detroit, Mich.
Funeral services will be field at 1:30 p. m. Friday at the Erbe Hoffmann Funeral home in Chilton. The Very Rev. Herbert S Stanton, vicar of St. Peter's Episcopal church, Sheboygan Falls will officiate, and burial will be in Hillside cemetery. Masonic rites will also be conducted at the funeral home.
