John was born in 1924 to Joseph A. and Elsa McDonald in Burlington.
He attended Burlington schools and enjoyed Lake Champlain and sports as a boy. He was a tackle for Buck Hard at Burlington High School.
John served his country honorably in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed on Saipan during World War II.
After discharge, it was on to UVM as an engineering student.
John then began his career with the US Postal Service. He retired as Director of Customer Service in Vermont.
In his retirement, John got his real estate license and was employed part time at LS Realty in Essex.
John married the love of his life, Ellie Mayo, in 1947 at St. Stephen's Church in Winooski.
They enjoyed 67 years of marriage as devout parishioners of St. Mark's Church.
John was a Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus at St. Mark's, and a Life Member of the Burlington Elks Lodge.
He was a youth baseball coach in Burlington and helped build the original North Burlington Little League Park.
John volunteered his time at the voting polls and was proud to attend the annual Veteran's Day celebrations in Battery Park.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, at St. Mark's Church in Burlington.
Interment to follow at New Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
