Sergeant Carlson was a member of the 25th Reconnaissance Company, 25th Infantry Division. He was taken Prisoner of War while fighting the enemy in South Korea on January 4, 1951 and died while a prisoner on April 30, 1951. His remains were not recovered. Sergeant Carlson was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.

An article in the St. Paul Pioneer Press of 5-28-2011 said the remains are being sent home in a casket with a military escort and will receive a full military burial on June 25 in Braham.
