Enlisted on 12 August 1861 at Alma, Gratiot County, Michigan; he was residing at Alma prior to his enlistment at 27 years of age and was enumerated in the 1860 Federal Census as a resident of Pine River Township, Gratiot County, Michigan; mustered in on 23 September 1861, Company C, Michigan 8th Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a 1st Sergeant; wounded in action (vulnus sclopetarium - gunshot wound) on 16 April 1862 at Wilmington Island, Georgia; died of his wound on 18 April 1862 at Beaufort, South Carolina.

The New York, U.S., State Census, 1865 for Fredrick M. Badger records he was a citizen of the state and that he had been promoted to the rank of 2nd Lieutenant prior to his death "from Orderly Sergeant to 2 Lieut." They also reported his date of death as 19 April. The U.S., Registers of Deaths of Volunteers, 1861-1865 records his rank as a "Lieut." Lastly, the 1890 Veterans Schedules of the U.S. Federal Census for Fredric M Badger related to a pension for his widow reports his rank as "2d Lieut."
