According to regimental records, Marvin W. Freeman enlisted at age 26 on 22 Aug 1862 at Edgington, IL, for 3 years in Company I, 126th Regiment, Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was a married farmer living in Buffalo Prairie, Rock Island Co., IL; height 5'7" with dark hair, eyes and complexion. He mustered into his regiment as a Private on 4 Sep 1862 in Alton, IL and soon was in Tennessee on duty. In May 1863, the 126th IL Infantry moved to Vicksburg, MS, where it took part in the siege and capture of that city. PVT Freeman's unit then moved into Arkansas and took part in several actions, including the expedition against Little Rock, battle at Bayou Fourche, and action at Clinton, plus duty at Duvall's Bluff and Pine Bluff. It appears that Marvin's brother, Charles W. Freeman, enlisted at age 18 in the same unit on Oct 4, 1864 for one year. At the end of the war, the Freeman brothers mustered out with their unit at Pine Bluff on 12 July 1865.
Pension records indicate that Marvin died on 17 March 1909, and that his military pension went to a minor child (application dated 28 June 1909.)
