James B. Steele, 78 Funeral-Set Wednesday
ROMULUS - Funeral services for James B. Steele, 78, retired state highway employee, who died late Saturday afternoon in the Taylor-Brown Memorial Hospital to which he was admitted the previous day, will be at 2 pm Wednesday in the Coryell Funeral Home in Ovid.
The Rev. Luther Cross, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, will officiate and burial will be in the Union Cemetery in Ovid. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Tuesday.
The deceased, son of the late George and Mary Van Tassel Steele, spent his youth in the northern part of the Township of Waterloo. For several years, He was employed as an attendant at Willard State Hospital. He was recognized as one of the best semi-pro baseball pitchers of this area contributed his share to victories enjoyed by the championship hospital teams in the period from 1909-1914.
Before his retirement in 1956, he had been employed for 35 years as a heavy equipment operator on Seneca County highways by the State Department of Public'Works.
He was an ardent Democrat and had served for years as a committeeman in the Town of Romulus. His hobbies were hunting and trapshooting He had membership in the South Seneca Sportsman's Club, was a member of the recently organized local Fire Police, and held life membership in the Romulus-Varick Volunteer Fire Department.
He is survived by his widow, Florence Carson Steele; three; daughters. Mrs. Tracy (Dorothy) Shiels, and Mrs. Walter (Margaret) Crane, both of Geneva; and Mrs. Roy (Alice) Burgdorf, of Romulus; and two sons, James R Steele, Romulus fire chief and George Steele, of Romulus; 10 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
