SPRINGFIELD - Frank Gates III, 78, of Springfield died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005, at Heritage Manor.
He was born Aug. 28, 1927, in Springfield, the son of Edgar F. and Maude Harrison Gates II. He married Mary L. Manhart in 1950. A son, Joseph John Gates, preceded him in death.
Mr. Gates was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He retired as a brakeman and switchman from CI&M Railroad in 1975. He also worked at Pillsbury Mills for 20 years and owned and operated Gates Cycle & Mower for 50 years.
He was a member of Elliott Avenue Baptist Church, Tyrian Lodge 333 AF&AM, where he was master of lodge in 1998, Masonic Lodge 523 in Chatham, Chatham American Legion, Valley of Springfield Scottish Rite, ANSAR Shrine, Ansar Legion of Honor, Masonic Grand Lecturers Club, Antique Buick Club, Ansar Retirees Club and ABATE.
Survivors: wife, Mary; daughter, Frances Louise Flanagan of Springfield; son, Anthony Frank (wife, Shannon) Gates of Springfield; two grandchildren; a great-grandchild; sister, Serilda Mackay of Raymond; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Staab Funeral Home. Burial: Oak Ridge Cemetery.
