Son of Robert Lincoln Stone and Constance Dana (Hazen) Stone.

Master Sgt. John Thomas "Tom" Stone, 52, of Norwich, Vermont; assigned to the 15th Civil Support Team, Vermont Army National Guard, South Burlington, Vt.; was killed March 28, 2006 during combat operations in Lashkagar, Afghanistan. He was on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan with the Vermont National Guard when he was killed.

He was a junior at Woodstock High School when his older brother, Dana Hazen Stone, a free-lance photographer, disappeared in Cambodia along with Sean Flynn, the son of the actor Errol Flynn. Dana was listed as missing in action for years and was eventually listed as dead. But Tom never lost the sense of adventure the military imbued in him or his desire to help those around him. Tom joined the Army in 1971, shortly after his high school graduation, motivated at least in part by a desire to learn what had happened to his brother.

Over the years, Stone served in the regular Army, the reserves and the Vermont National Guard. A memorial honors Sgt. Stone at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri where he had been stationed for several years. He played an instrumental role in improving the Civil Support Team at the fort. He also developed a program that is now the Department of Defense's premiere chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear training course.

Between 1992 and 2000 he walked around the world, literally, 22,000 miles through 29 countries.

Stone never married but he left a life partner and a sister.
