BUTLER-IVAN J. BROWN, 84, of Butler died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, in the Laurels of DeKalb nursing home in Butler. He owned and operated Brown Furniture and Hardware store in St. Joe for 25 years before he retired in 1986. He was a Newville Township farmer for 16 years. He worked on a section gang on Wabash and New York Central railroads for seven years. He was a member of Newville United Methodist Church.

He was born April 19, 1920, in DeKalb County to John B. and Cora (Gramling) Brown. On Dec. 1, 1941, he married Betty M. Nichols. She died Nov. 28, 2002. Surviving are three sons and two daughters-in-law, Steven W. and Karen Brown of Waterloo, Nick L. and Carol Brown of West Lafayette and Bradley K. Brown of Woodburn; one daughter, Cathy Bowen of Butler; one sister, Mazie Thompson of Auburn; and 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife and one brother, Cecil Brown.

Private family services will be Sunday at Feller Funeral Home in Waterloo with the Rev. Tony Brooks officiating. Burial will be in Newville Cemetery. There will be no calling.
