Brownie was a wonderful Quarter Horse. We could throw a small child on her and she would plod slowly along. It often seemed she "wiggled" to keep a child from falling off. Of course, she might have liked those children because she could ignore what they wanted her to do and instead do what she thought was best???

With a more experienced rider, she was far less docile and made them stay as alert as she was, such as keeping an eye out for the low-hanging branches she was fond of walking under. You might say Brownie was ornery. I know she was incredibly intelligent. After being bitten on a hind foot by a rattlesnake when she was 16, she limped and wheezed whenever we took her out pleasure riding....until we turned around and headed back to the corral. Miraculously, the limp and wheeze disappeared!

Her true love (other than being left alone in the pasture) was cutting and working cattle. She was so good at it, all you had to do was point out the cow you wanted, and then hang on while she did her thing. Anyone could drive cattle on her - but her true partner was my dad. Many years after both Dad and Brownie were gone, a neighbor commented the two of them were so in tune with each other, they knew what the other was going to do before they did it. We seemed to always have the most cantankerous Angus bulls and trying to drive them from the pasture to the corral was a battle. Brownie took it as a challenge and delighted in getting the best of those bulls.

When my son was born, the first time I visited my parents, after showing my baby to my mother, I bundled him back up and took him down to the corral. Brownie came over and I introduced my best friend to my baby. His first ride was on Brownie just four months later.

She was the mother of Skeeter, Flicka, Apple and Midnight.
