On June 2, 2009, after an extended illness, Dorothy Jean Hullderman, 81, passed away in Lafayette, Louisiana, surrounded by her loving family.

Dorothy was born at home on September 15, 1927 in the town of Gypsy, near Fairmont, West Virginia. She was the younger of two children born to Carrie (Ice) Heldreth and Arlie Heldreth. She graduated from East Fairmont High School in 1946, and married Ernest Hullderman on June 16, 1946 in the Columbia Street Church of Christ. They moved to the farm on Route 250, and raised two daughters, Nancy and Shirley. Jean was an active member of the Whitehall Church of Christ in Fairmont, WV. She resided at Route 250 until her failing health caused her to move in with her daughter Shirley and her son-in-law Bruce. She and Ernest have lived in Lafayette, Louisiana for the last four years, and Jean continued to be an active member of the Riverside Church in Lafayette.

Dorothy worked at the 5&10 and sold war bonds before she was married. She was a homemaker and a devoted mother and wife. She was involved with the Whitehall Nursery School for 30 years, where she was known as Mrs. Jean. Because of her friendly spirit, caring heart and abounding love for little children, Mrs. Jean was very well-liked. She impacted the lives of many children, parents and co-workers, who will always remember her.

In her life, the most important thing to Dorothy was her family. She was known as Mom-Mom Jean to all who loved her. Her family grew to include three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Nancy Hullderman Johnson has retired from teaching and lives with her husband, Harry, in Oceanside, California. Their daughter, Amanda, is an orthopedic surgeon in her fourth year of residency in Hershey, Pennsylvania; Shirley Hullderman Blakemore, former director-teacher at the Whitehall Nursery School, lives in Lafayette, Louisiana with her husband Bruce; their daughter Jeanne Anne Horner, an elementary school teacher, lives with her husband Andy in Katy, Texas, near Houston. Jeanne and Andy have two children - Hannah Jean and Andrew Bruce. Shirley and Bruce’s son, Jason Bruce Blakemore is a petroleum engineer who lives in Keller, Texas with his wife Karen and his daughter Emily Marie. Hannah, Drew and Emily are Mom-Mom Jean’s great-grandchildren, and they have brought great joy to her life. Mom-Mom Jean was extremely proud of her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Hullderman and her sister Betty Lockhart.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, on Saturday, June 13, 2009 in Fairmont, West Virginia. Visitation will be from 9:00am to 11:00am. The Memorial will be conducted by Bruce Blakemore, son-in-law of Dorothy, and it will start at 11:00am. Jean will be buried beside her husband of 63 years in the Beverly Hills Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers are her grandsons Jason Blakemore and Andrew Horner, her nephews Dr. John Lockhart and Dick Hedio, neighbor Jodie Cogar and friend Matt Tokery.

Dorothy Jean’s love of people is reminiscent of these words: “Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever, the same.”

Mom-Mom Jean will be missed by all, but we know she will have peace in the valley today.
