Although he was a D.C. resident since 1889 he was on his way back from a trip to the midwest when he died. He left a wife Marie, sisters Margaret & Lula, and a brother George in St. Louis. He had many decorations and awards over his 42 years in the fire dept. But he was only the 2nd 'negro' to obtain the rank of captain in the D.C. fire service.
