Born Adrianus Jacob Van Essen, son of Commer Van Essen and Christina Jacoba Tas Van Essen in Brandwyck, Zuid-Holland, Holland. Step-son of Tjitske Postema Van Essen.
His WWI Draft Registration Card, dated June 4, 1917, states he was employed as a Furniture Polisher at the Chase Furniture Company in Grand Rapids. He was suffering from Tubercular disease of the spine. He was single, an alien, of medium height and build with dark brown hair and blue eyes.

Obituary appeared in the Grand Rapids Press on November 19, 1917, page 15:
"VAN ESSEN, Adrian, aged twenty-nine, died November 18 at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Commer Van Essen, 1046 Hall street. He is survived by his parents, four brothers and one sister. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at (?) at the home. Interment will be in Garfield Park cemetery."
