Former Store Owner, Dead

Mechanicville - Leonard B. Baker, 83, died at his home, 410 Park Ave., last night following a long illness.

Mr. Baker was born in Mechanicville, Aug. 5, 1872, son of the late Silas W. and Elsie Bell Baker. He attended the local schools and Albany Business College.

He was employed in the B. and M. Railroad office here and later in the Hoosick St. office in Troy. In 1903, with his brother, Silas W. Baker he started Baker Bros. store on Park Ave. which became widely known and was operated by them more than 40 years before their retirement.

He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and for more than 50 years of On-Da-Wa Lodge and a former member of Mechanicville Rotary Club.

He is survived by his wife, Gertrude Smith Baker, one sister, Mrs. Elsie Manierre, one brother, Silas, and one nephew, Edward A. Baker of New York City.

The funeral will be held at the residence Sun. at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Robert Field, rector of St. Luke's, officiating, with the Rev. Frank J. Reid, pastor of the First Methodist Church, assisting. Burial will be in Hudson View Cemetery.

The Rev. Mr. Field will visit the home tomorrow at 8 p.m. to recite prayers. On-Da-Wa Lodge will conduct services tomorrow at 8:15 p.m. Members are asked to meet at 7:30. Funeral arrangements under the direction of J. D. Dunn Funeral Home.
