Billy J. Barnhill, age 82, of Chatham, died at 11:31 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2014.

He was the son of Harve and Maude (nee Peyton) Barnhill. He married Sharon Lounsberry on February 14, 1997, in Springfield.

Billy graduated from East St. Louis High School and then proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy for four years during the Korean Conflict.

He joined the Illinois State Police on December 15, 1957 as a trooper in District 11. He transferred to District 9 and joined District 52. During his tenure, with executive security he served Lt. Governor Dave O'Neil, Attorney General Tyrone Fahner and Secretary of State, Jim Edgar. He retired on July 31, 1983.

Billy was a member of the State Police American Legion Post #1922. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and enjoyed football. He also bowled in leagues that competed in tournaments across the country and enjoyed having coffee with his friends at the local Hardees.

Billy is survived by his wife, Sharon Barnhill of Chatham; five children, Connie (Michael) Grubermann of Franklin, N.C., Billy J. (Kathi) Barnhill of Independence, La., Melissa (Crawford) Bealon of Springfield, Whitney (John) Seaborn of Plainfield, and Brandi (Christopher) Barnett of Springfield; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Peyton "Red" Barnhill.

Visitation: Family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, 900 S. 6th St., Springfield.

Funeral Ceremony: 12:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 3, 2014, at Kirlin-Egan & Butler Funeral Home, with Celebrant Judy Woerner officiating.

Private family burial will be held.
