Harry was the son of Theodore and Mariah (Voores) Oliver. He married Sylvia Matilda Hoagland on Oct. 8, 1882. They remained married until Sylvia's death in 1948. Harry and Sylvia had eight children, James, Emma, Anna, Maggy, Ruth, Harry Jr., Elva and Harold.
Harry worked for the railroad and later cared for the bears at Garfield Park in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was well known for his white hair and handlebar mustache.
