Richard Layton Stringer, 79, of Campbells Creek, joined his beloved wife in Heaven on July 24, 2004. He died peacefully in his home after a long and courageous battle with COPD and congestive heart failure. A Marmet native, Richard lived in Campbells Creek with his wife of more than 50 years, Betty Barbardine Stringer. Together they enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping in Pocahontas County. Richard was also an avid woodworker. He served in World War II and was honorably discharged from the Army in 1945. A diesel mechanic, Richard worked for E.I. DuPont and Baker Equipment in Charleston, retiring in 1990. His loving wife, Betty Barbardine, preceded Richard in death. Surviving: children, Linda Pauley of Campbells Creek and Lonnie Stringer and his wife, Yvonne of Dunbar; his grandchildren, Sherri Johnson and her husband, Craig and Todd Pauley and his wife, Lisa, all of Lexington, Ky., Erica Clarke and her husband, Scott, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Bryan Stringer of Dunbar; and his great-grandchildren, Blake and Cole Johnson and Jacob and Megan Pauley. He is also survived by his siblings, Freda Smalley of Charleston, June Heizer of Elkview, Martha Nolen and her husband, John of Lewisburg and Howard Sprouse and his wife, Wanda, of Clintonville.
